Drying Up

The Roaring River is no longer roaring as lack of rainfall and consistent heat has caused the flow of the river to dwindle to a small stream. Many longtime Valley residents have been comparing this year’s dry state to that of the 1961 drought. A story in the Jul 13, 1961 edition of the Star and Times expressed the urgency for farmers to participate in a farm-by-farm survey to determine hay and feed grains needs as well as present and future water supply requirements. While the Valley was being hit hard by drought it wasn’t as bad as other areas of the province and local farmers banded together with farmers to the north to send hay down to the harder hit areas. The article also stated that during the 1930s the Valley was one of the only green spots in Manitoba and many farmers actually transported their herds here for hay.
