Deceptively Sunny

Canola fields across the Valley are in full bloom, painting a deceptively cheery picture. But, the intense heat and lack of rainfall that the province has been experiencing is taking its toll and compounding on issues experienced in the spring. Manitoba Agriculture and Resource Development reports that only 50 percent of the canola crop in our region rated as good with the remainder in fair to poor condition. The canola is patchy, shorter than normal, stagey and many fields still have bare spots. These effects are the result of dry conditions, insect feeding, spring frost and wind.
