Every Child Matters

The news of the discovery of 215 children’s remains at the site of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School in Kamloops, B.C. has elicited a profound reaction across the country with flags being lowered, displays of children’s shoes and teddy bears put out to mark the young lives lost and, in schools across the country, the wearing of orange shirts. Orange shirts, often bearing the slogan “Every child matters” are normally worn each Sept. 30 on Orange Shirt Day, during the time of year when Indigenous children were taken away to residential schools.
