Local Baker Takes the Cake

Swan River’s part-time baker extraordinaire Brenda Deneer of Brenda’s Cupcakes and More has been playing the waiting game recently to see if she would make it on to the Great Canadian Baking Show – a national televised baking competition that airs on CBC Television.
“I enjoy baking and decorating, and this would be an amazing opportunity and challenge for me if I make it to the next stage,” said Deneer, who has already been through producer vetting and an audition for the show, which she completed in Winnipeg on March 14.
“After I applied, I had a phone interview with a production coordinator from the show. I included a picture of a cake I decorated recently. She was impressed with the detail of my work and that I had only been decorating for close to four years. The following day, I received an official invitation to audition for Season 3.”
To audition for the program, she brought in another baked item that she had produced.
“I brought a vanilla cake, and each layer was brushed with sweet cream syrup and filled it with vanilla buttercream and shortbread cookie crumble,” said Deneer. “A pastry chef tasted the baking items we brought, and we were required to leave a piece of our baked goods as well as a piece of the baking we prepared there.”
In addition to the cake she was able to lovingly prepare beforehand, Deneer also was subject to a on-site technical challenge.
“We had to make a biscuit recipe that was missing information, which needed to be mixed and in the oven within 10 minutes,” said Deneer.
“I met some very talented bakers from Manitoba and Saskatchewan.”
Deneer added that she has no idea what the next stage of auditions may be, but is expecting to know this week whether she moves on.
Until then, cross your fingers and keep your eyes peeled in the future if a Swan Valley baker makes it to a kitchen on a television near you.
