The Swan Valley District Recreation Commission presented the Volunteer of the Year award to Neil Brown. The award is given to outstanding members of the community who generously give their time to organizations and projects that better our Valley.
Local fiddler Tayler Fleming travelled to Churchill on Dec. 17 as part of the Manitoba Metis Federation Churchill 2017 Tour to help spread Christmas joy to those left isolated when the railway washed out.
The Town of Swan River confirmed their intention to work with the Province of Manitoba on cannabis legalization and sale of cannabis from locations within municipal limits once it has become legal.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba concluded an investigation into an allegation of unsafe storage of a firearm by former Swan River RCMP Officer, Constable Geremy Newbury, who currently serves the Winnipeg area. The investigation concluded there were reasonable and probable grounds of a criminal offense.

It took firefighters from four departments, Minitonas, Swan River, Birch River and Bowsman, to extinguish a blaze at the Swan Valley Louisiana Pacific Plant on Jan. 2 when spontaneous combustion created a fire engulfing bundles of finished goods in an outdoor storage area.
The Swan Valley Animal Protection League, operating since 1987, put out a plea for funding to keep their organization running to benefit the Valley.
The residents of the Municipality of Minitonas-Bowsman may see a change in road maintenance service after they decided not to enter a new contract with the Province of Manitoba for the upkeep of provincial roads within the municipality’s boundaries.
