Golf Team Gets Frozen out at Provincials

The SVRSS Tigers golf team finished fifth at Provincials on Friday (Sept. 28) when the Zone 8 Champion SVRSS Tigers Girls’ golf team attended MHSAA provincials at the Hecla Island Golf Resort.
After a practice round on the wet course on Thursday (Sept. 27) the team commuted from Gimli on the cold Friday morning, and were welcomed with snow.
The original start time was delayed until 11 a.m. and eventually noon before the snow melted off the fairways and greens.
Many were surprised at noon when the course superintendent provided consent to play, and MHSAA’s organizing committee elected to play the event. Temperatures were below zero celsius for most of the day and on some holes the snow was coming down hard enough that tracking the flight of the golf balls was very difficult.
To say playing conditions were difficult would be an understatement and the future Tiger golf teams will likely ensure they always carry some coloured balls to find in the snow.
•Brittan Yaschyshyn 115
•Ashton Kirk 119
•Sydney Gilroy 125
•Emily Simpson 126
The defending Provincial Champion Tigers score of 359 placed them in for fifth place out of 8 Zone Champions.
The team would like to acknowledge the dedicated dads Brian Gilroy, Mark Simpson and Tom Yaschyshyn for travelling to Hecla to support the team.
Grade 12 students Emily Simpson and Ashton Kirk now graduate while Brittan Yaschyshyn and Sydney Gilroy will be spending their winter recruiting a couple teammates for next season.
