Athletes Medal at Canada Summer Games

Three local Special Olympics Parkland athletes have returned home proud of their achievements and newly decorated with some hardware from the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games, which were held this year in Antigonish, N.S., from July 31-Aug. 4.
Local athletes John Schabert, Ricky Zimmer, and Kendall Leslie flew across the country to show their stuff in the sports of swimming, bocce, and athletics respectively. Between the three of them, they scored podium finishes four times, with two gold medals and two bronze medals.
“My favourite part of the trip was going out east to Nova Scotia for the first time,” said Schabert. “I had never been there before, I enjoyed it, and I got to meet new people and new friends.”
Schabert added that he was happy with his performances that netted him two medals.
Zimmer and Leslie echoed Schabert’s sentiment, saying that they really liked being able to fly across the country to somewhere they had never been, and the opportunity to meet new athletes.
Their results were as follows: (athlete – event, final rank)
• John Schabert – 50 metre Freestyle, third; 25 metre Backstroke, first; 25 metre Freestyle, fifth.
• Ricky Zimmer – Bocce Singles, third.
• Kendall Leslie – Shot Put 4 kilograms, sixth; Long Jump, first; 100 metre Run, eighth.
