At 9:05 on Wednesday morning (May 9), the Swan River Fire Department, Prairie Mountain Health Emergency Medical Services (EMS), and Swan River RCMP responded to a report of a fire in the second storey of a commercial building containing apartments with persons trapped inside, located on the 500 block of Main Street. Upon arrival, firefighters initiated a coordinated aggressive offensive attack and rescue operations. While search and suppression crews maintained operations, exterior teams using ladders removed three individuals from the second storey, and a fourth individual was assisted from the building by way of a stairwell. All were placed under EMS care and three were taken to hospital for minor injuries. During operations, Minitonas Fire Department was requested for standby and additional manpower. The cause of the fire appears to be suspicious, and the Office of the Fire Commission is assisting with the investigation. The SRFD would like to remind the public that properly installed and maintained smoke alarms save lives, and play a vital role in reducing fire deaths and injuries.
