Celebrating Daffodil Days

Volunteers hit the streets of Swan River last Tuesday (March 20) selling the always popular bouquets of sunny daffodils to rase money for the Canadian Cancer Society.
“We are very excited about the success of our campaign this year,” said Vivian Rooks, who co-coordinated the local campaign with Denise Gogol. “We received preorders for over 400 bundles and we totally sold out our extra bundles.
“Gardewine once again donated the freight cost to transport the flowers from Winnipeg, and it worked out that we were able to receive them on Monday, which allowed us to sort the preorders and baskets for the sales on Tuesday.”
Proceeds from the flower sales totalled $5,940, and this will be added to the monies collected from the pin boxes that are located at various local business offering daffodil pins at $2.00 until the end of April.
According to the Canadian Cancer Society, this amount of money can:
• fund two Manitoba cancer patients for seven months in a ground-breaking clinical trial;
• provide a bursary to encourage a Manitoba PHD student to continue their studies in the cancer field;
• provide information support to 33 Manitoba cancer patients and their families through our Cancer Information Services;
• provide transportation support for two cancer patients undergoing radiation treatment by picking them up from their home and taking them to treatment for nearly a month;
• match two newly diagnosed cancer patients with a support person who has survived the same cancer through our Peer Support program; and
• provide 375 test tubes so our researchers can continue to search for a cure!
