A Universal Symbol

Those that have driven down 10th Avenue North in Swan River recently may have seen a friendly, eight-foot gesture carved in snow. From the design work to completion, the frozen hand flashing a peace sign took local artist Derryl May approximately 30-40 hours to complete. “I often consider how we communicate with each other through our body language, and I use this as a tool to communicate to my audience,” said May. “I felt that the peace sign was the most positive and uplifting hand gesture that the vast majority of people would recognize, and hopefully have a positive effect.” Last year, May had constructed an owl in the same place on his front lawn, although rising temperatures did not allow for its completion. At night, May’s snowy masterpiece shines brightly for all to see.
