The Swan Valley Cheetahs Gymnastics Club hosted a gymnastics competition last Saturday (March 11) at the SVRSS gymnasium. Teams from Birtle, Flin Flon, Grandview, Neepawa, Thompson as well as the host Cheetahs participated. Athletes were of all levels from beginner to pre-provincial, competing in four categories: floor routine, aerial bars, vault, and balance beam.
“Overall our competition was very successful,” said Head Coach Elvis Cardenas. “The meet ran smoothly and on time.”
“All of our gymnasts did their best at their home competition. They worked hard and also learned what they need to work on next. But, most of all, everyone had fun, showed their best skills, and were part of a great team.”
A total of 26 local gymnasts participated in the competition.
“Our girls did very well, and placed as expected,” said Cardenas. “We got on the podium in all levels and we are very happy with the results.”
While there were many memorable moments during the tournament, Cardenas mentioned that one of the highlights was how well the gymnasts placed in their events and in the all-around category. Another highlight was the judges that turned out for the event.
“For the first time we had six judges, two of them from Winnipeg, who brought lots of experience,” said Cardenas. “That makes the competition run faster and better, and also makes other clubs interested in competing in Swan River. This is a great meet to prepare for the upcoming provincials.”
Cardenas expressed appreciation to all the parents for a job well done.
Results for the meet were not posted at press time. Once entered, they can be found online at www.gymnastics.mb.ca/results.
The team we will be training hard for the upcoming Provincials scheduled to take place in Thompson from April 22-24.
“This means more conditioning and perfecting the skills in order to do our best at the Championships this year,” concluded Cardenas. “We will be taking the Advanced and Pre-Provincial gymnasts to the Provincials.”
